A popular event designed to connect and build understanding between first responders and people with autism returns this weekend in Wellington.
A Day for Autism is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26 at Village Park, 11700 Pierson Road, Wellington.
This free event includes vendors, games and activities for people with special needs. Many of the vendors offer autism-related services like ABA therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. A free lunch is provided by Bolay. Register in advance by clicking here to go to the Eventbrite page.
The picnic is the result of a partnership between the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Wellington and the Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism & Related Disabilities.
“This is a great learning experience for law enforcement,” said PBSO Deputy Scott Poritz, who helped to found A Day for Autism, at the Jan. 10 Wellington council meeting. “What better way to learn about autism and interact in real time, than at a desk or in a classroom.”
The event provides a place where families can learn about services for autism, while also connecting and becoming familiar with first responders. Last year’s event drew 750 attendees, with 350 of those being children and the rest being caregivers or family members, Poritz told the council.
Family-friendly activities at this year’s A Day for Autism: petting zoo, face painting, bounce house, games, trackless train, arts and crafts, touch-a-truck, Kona Ice and a DJ. There also will be a Relax Zone for parents. Which honestly sounds incredibly appealing.
There also will be opportunities for people with autism to interact with law enforcement, with therapy dogs, the PBSO mounted unit, a 911 bus and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue vehicles on-site.
